“Teaching is a frame of mind.”
Melissa Ansley Brooks is a talented and engaging educator with a decade of classroom teaching experience, program leadership, instructional design, and curriculum development for adult learners in post-secondary education.
Raised in rural poverty and the first in my family to attend college, my belief in the transformative power of education has become living proof.
My teaching approach is simple: firm, but fair. My role as an educator is ever-evolving to the needs of a diversifying student body but includes the establishment of challenging yet achievable goals, supporting student effort - not achievement alone- setting clear expectations, and sound learning objectives, and ensuring that no student sacrifices self-esteem for outcomes. Formative feedback, rooted in a growth mindset, is my secret weapon of choice. Learning is a social affair, therefore my classroom is an active environment rich with debate, collaborative problem-solving, and self-reflection. I measure my success by my students’ sustained curiosity, their connection with peers, and the degree of compassion they extend and receive as they move throughout the course. I hope that by committing to this framework, the joy of learning will become intrinsic to each student and produce critical and creative thinkers ready to engage in all the world has to offer. With any luck, I will remain a memorable facilitator on their journey to self-actualization.

Elements of my methods and practices:
My teaching philosophy serves as a written expression of my values, beliefs, and goals as an educator. If you’d like to learn more about my approach to education, I invite you to read my teaching philosophy.
A syllabus is a contract between the instructor and the student. It should provide a framework of objectives and expectations with a tone of “high hope” that sets students up for success. Review my sample syllabus.
Assignments are by design in my classroom. This particular real-world legal problem challenges students’ creative and critical thinking abilities, matched with a practical research and communication component. I invite you to analyze a classroom assignment.

“Melissa is the most amazing teacher and human being. I have taken several of her classes and her knowledge and expertise in the legal field boggle my mind. She is passionate about her work and her students. I know she has helped several students find jobs while they are still in school. I am very impressed with Professor Brooks as a person. She is strict but fair and wants all of us to learn as much as we can and to succeed in whatever area motivates us. She is a true professional and an awesome teacher.” -Student Submission
